Other common symptoms include: bloating, nausea, diarrhea, night sweats or chills, brain fogginess, dizziness, shortness of breath, chronic cough, visual disturbances, allergies or sensitivities to foods, alcohol, chemicals, irregular heartbeat or palpitations, jaw pain, or eyes or mouth.

The Centers for Disease Control officially recognized this condition in 1988. Chronic fatigue syndrome is more common in women than men, and the majority of people affected are in their thirties.

Ulcerative colitis is a disease of the colon, which is the largest part of the large intestine, characterized by ulcers (or open sores). These ulcers are painful wounds, they may bleed and also produce mucus as well as pus.

The mucosa or the inner lining of the large intestine becomes red and swollen. The most severely affected of all parts is the rectal area. If the lining of the colon is damaged, it may begin to cause bloody diarrhea.

Honey can act as a bacteriostatic (it means that is stops the activity of the bacteria and the bacteria does not remain harmful anymore); and it can also be bactericidal at different concentrations. 5 to 11% of concentration of Manuka honey proves to be bacteriostatic, whereas 8 to 15% of concentration is found to be bactericidal.

These are achieved because of the high sugar content of the honey. As the solute concentration is higher in the honey (as Manuka honey is very viscous) than the solute concentration in bacteria, the water in the bacteria is drawn out. This limits the growth of bacteria.

Manuka honey has a low pH ; that is between 3 and 4.5, it is acidic and hence most microorganisms are unable to survive in such conditions

The usual honeys consist of a compound called “hydrogen peroxide” which takes away electrons from the membranes of the bacteria and hence disrupts their structure.

However, Manuka honey may have the hydrogen peroxide production blocked due to several factors such as the presence of an enzyme called “catalase”. Yet, its viscosity and pH are enough to fight against any pathogen present.

Manuka Honey Helps Heal Ulcers

 

Ulcerative colitis is characterized by ulcers, that are painful and open wounds. Manuka honey has the capacity to heal these wounds. It stimulates the process of healing. This healing can occur only when the infection clears out. As ulcers are pus oozing wounds, it signifies infection.

Manuka honey has a compound called “methylglyoxal”. This leads to the alteration of some proteins present in the honey which gives it high antimicrobial properties.

Manuka honey pretreatment was given and it was as effective as a drug named “omeprazole” which is used to treat ulcers. Manuka honey successfully protected the gastric lining of rats against lesions. There were no changes in the tissue lining on the rats that were pretreated with Manuka honey.

Gastric ulcers reduce concentration of antioxidant enzymes. However, the addition of Manuka honey increased the levels of these antioxidants preventing the damage to the walls of the gastrointestinal tract.

Manuka honey reduces “plasma tumour necrosis factor-α” which is a protein involved in inflammation; which in turn reduces inflammation. It also decreases the interleukin-1β and interleukin-6 which are substances secreted by the immune system cells of our body and eventually lead to inflammation.

Manuka Honey is an Antioxidant

 

An antioxidant is a substance that stops the process on oxidation in the cells; which cause cell deterioration and eventually lead to cell death. Oxidation includes a series of chain reactions where highly reactive radicals are produced.

These radicals need electrons to get stable, which they end up taking from the cells of the body which makes the cells of the body lose their structure and gradual death. Antioxidants are required to inhibit this from happening.

Manuka honey consists of substances called “polyphenols” which have antioxidant activity. The intestines are the sites where many oxidants are produced, more being present in the colon where ulcerative colitis is prevalent.

 The reason behind this is that there are many microbes, presence of cells of the immune system and food ingredients present there. The antioxidant capacity in patients suffering from ulcerative colitis is less, hence antioxidants are required to prevent the devastating effect on the cells of the intestines; which can prove to be cancerous.

A study was conducted where an experiment was carried out to see the effect of Manuka honey in combination with a drug called “sulfasalazine” as a means of enhancing the antioxidant activity. Ulcerative colitis was experimentally induced in an animal model.

 

Sulfasalazine is a medicine used to treat symptoms of ulcerative colitis, such as diarrhea and rectal pain. It was found that the combination of Manuka honey and sulfasalazine reduced inflammation of the colon.

It was also proven that this combination increased the antioxidants in the colon and also prevented the peroxidation of lipids (that is, taking away of electrons from lipids in the cell membrane of cells of the colon thereby breaking it down).

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is estimated that 78 million adults above the age of 18 will be affected by arthritis and two thirds of those would be women.

 

 

 

 

Osteoarthritis involves degradation of the cartilage- the tissue that ensures better flexibility of bone joints. This leads to friction and wear and tear of the joints leading to inflammation and pain.

 

 

 

 

Osteoarthritis can affect joints like that of thumbs, fingers, neck, lower back, knee and hips. Treatment involves exercise and pain relief medications such as NSAIDs and opioids.

 

 

 

The current treatment available for arthritis is symptomatic based and designed to control progression of the disease but many individuals do not respond to this treatment.

 

Active research is being conducted to identify more effective treatments and part of this focus is diverted to alternative medicine.

 

 

 

 

 

Boswellia serrata is a tree that grows in dry mountainous regions of India, North Africa and Middle East and it is commonly known as Indian Frankincense. There as many as 25 species belonging to the Genus Boswellia.

 

 

 

 

Three other popular forms of boswellia include: boswellia carteri, boswellia frereana and boswellia sacra. The resin obtained from Bosweliia frereana is the most expensive brand available in the market.

Salai or oleo-gum resin is obtained from the bark of Boswellia tree which is solidified and chopped to form small pieces with aromatic scent.

Prior to being used for medicinal purposes, Boswellia serrata was used as incense, fumigant and for other aromatic purposes. Even today incense sticks and powder are prepared from it.

The resin is graded based on color, shape, flavour and size. The gum resin contains 30-60% resin, 5-10% essential oils and the rest are polysaccharides. The essential oils impart the fragrance and these are also extracted for commercial purposes.

 

 

The resinous part contains monoterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenes, pentacyclic triterpenic acids (boswellic acids) and tetracyclic triterpenic acids. These are the compounds that contribute to Boswellia serrata’s medicinal value.

Traditionally Boswellia serrata is used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, ringworm, boils, fevers (antipyretic), skin and blood diseases, cardiovascular diseases, mouth sores, bad throat, bronchitis, asthma, cough, vaginal discharges, hair-loss, jaundice, hemorrhoids, syphilitic diseases, irregular menses and stimulation of liver.

 

Current research proves that Boswellia serrata possesses pharmacological properties like anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, hepatoprotective etc and this could offer relief in osteoarthritis.

 

 

Boswellia Serrata Arthritis Research

 

 

Study:  Boswellia Serrata Reduces Osteoarthritis Symptoms in 7 Days

 

Kimmatkar et. al have the studied the effect of standardized extract of boswellia serrata on knee osteoarthritis in 2003. The preparation contained 65% organic acids and 40% Boswellic acid (trade name WokVel).

The study lasted for 8 weeks and dose was 333mg thrice a day.

 

A decrease in knee pain, increased knee flexibility, increased walking distance and ability to climb stairs was reported but the symptoms returned on cessation of the treatment.

 

A clinical trial was conducted to assess the efficacy of 5-Loxin in knee osteoarthritis. This was published in 2008. 5-Loxin is a specialized extract of Boswellia serrata which contains 30% AKBA and inhibits the activity of 5-lipooxygenase enzyme to curb inflammation.

75 patients participated in the study and received 100 or 250 mg of 5-Loxin for 3 months. 250mg dosage was more effective than 100mg, improvement in pain score and joint function was seen as early as 7 days with 250mg dose.

Additionally a reduction in enzyme MMP-3 in the fluid lubricating the joints was observed. This enzyme is responsible for cartilage degradation. Overall 5-Loxin reduces inflammation, relieves pain, improves joint function and reduces bone degradation in osteoarthritis with effects visible within 7 days.

Aflapin is another formulation of Boswellia serrata. It is a novel synergestic compound obtained from resin of Boswellia serrata (enriched with AKBA and non volatile oil).

The bioavailability of AKBA- a strong boswellic acid is better in Aflapin than 5-Loxin. Bioavailabilty is absorption and distribution of a compound in the body.

Additionally it has better anti-inflammatory action than 5-Loxin. In a study (year 2011) comparing the effects of the two formulation on knee osteoarthritis improvement in pain score and joint function was seen as early as 7 days with 100mg Aflapin.

Both formulations were safe and effective for osteoarthritis but Aflapin was found more effective than 5-Loxin.

Vishal et. al report that 100mg Aflapin reduces pain and improves joint function in osteoarthritis as early as 5 days.

A dose of 6g per day in combination with topical application was found to reduce the symptoms in the course of 2 months.

 

 

 

What does this mean?
Bioavailable forms of Boswellia serrata extracts – Aflapin and 5-Loxin ease  osteoarthritis symptoms as early as 7 days. Research suggests that Aflapin is faster acting than 5-Loxin. Topical application of Boswellia also hastens improvement.

M.Z. Siddiqui in his paper ‘Boswellia Serrata, A Potential Anti-inflammatory Agent: An Overview’ speaks about how this herb exerts its anti-inflammatory property in a unique manner compared to other herbs and medicines.

Boswellic acids present in the resinous part are the compounds are responsible for its anti-inflammatory action. Most herbs and anti-inflammatory drugs reduced inflammation by inhibiting the activity of enzyme COX.

Boswellic acids, on the other hand, inhibit formation of leukotrienes (pro-inflammatory agent) by inhibiting the action of inflammatory enzyme LOX. It also inhibits the activity of enzyme human leukocyte elastase which triggers inflammation by damaging tissues.

This dual action is unique to boswellic acids. The most potent inhibitor of LOX among the boswellic acids is AKBA or 3-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid.

 

In an animal model, boswellic acids have demonstrated 45-67% anti-arthritic activity due to its anti-inflammatory action. In another experimental model of anti-inflammatory activity boswellic acids showed 35% inhibition of inflammation and its mechanism of action was unlike aspirin or steroids.

 

Boswellia serrata extract is found to inhibit the activity of inflammatory cells. It also regulates immune responses in order to reduce inflammation.

Incensole acetate, a novel anti-inflammatory compound present in the resin inhibits the activity of main protein controlling inflammation-nuclear factor kappa B.

Inhibition of other enzymes have also been reported which contribute to its anti-inflammatory effect and research suggests that boswellia serrata could be an alternative to NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

 

Results of a clinical trial indicate that Boswellia extract is more effective than valdecoxib (anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits COX enzyme) in knee osteoarthritis. Boswellia is slow acting but its therapeutic effects are persistent even after stopping the therapy unlike valdecoxib.

 

 

What does this mean?
Boswellia Serrata has a unique way of reducing inflammation. It inhibits the activity of LOX enzyme which is involved in inflammation unlike other agents which act on COX enzyme (inflammatory enzyme).

 Research shows that its anti-inflammatory effect is more persistent than that of a conventional medicine that inhibits COX enzyme.

Magnesium – a Great Help for Diabetics

 

 

 

Based on information from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), magnesium is practically a wonder drug. Yet few people know about it, and few doctors recommend it. It helps maintain muscles and nerves, regulates blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure, and prevents heart attacks.

 

A study published through the American Diabetes Association shows that oral magnesium supplementation with magnesium restores serum magnesium and improves insulin sensitivity in subjects with type 2 diabetes and decreased serum magnesium levels, thus contributing to metabolic control.

In addition,  a meat-analysis of 9 trials in 2014 shows that that those with higher magnesium intake are 10-47% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. In the U.S., however, only about 50% of the population achieve the recommended dietary allowance of magnesium, which is 400-420 mg/day for men and 300-310 mg/day for women.

This meta-analysis of 9 trials studying magnesium supplements in those with type 2 diabetes found that 360 mg/day resulted in lower fasting glucose levels, while another smaller and more recent trial studying obese, nondiabetic, insulin-resistant patients found that 365 mg/day for 6 months not only lowered fasting glucose values, but also lowered fasting insulin and insulin resistance, and improved insulin sensitivity.

In patients with other risk factors, such as mild hypertension, 3-month supplementation with magnesium was found to improve insulin sensitivity and pancreatic β-cell function. Low magnesium diets, meanwhile, have been shown to impair insulin sensitivity in just 3 weeks in otherwise healthy patients.

 

A study by Dr. Ka He of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and colleagues found that people who consumed the most magnesium in foods and from vitamin supplements were about half as likely to develop diabetes over the next 20 years as people who took in the least magnesium. 

Dr. Ka He and colleagues also found that as magnesium intake rose, levels of several markers of inflammation decreased, as did resistance to the effects of the key blood-sugar-regulating hormone insulin. Higher blood levels of magnesium also were linked to a lower degree of insulin resistance.

“Increasing magnesium intake may be important for improving insulin sensitivity, reducing systemic inflammation, and decreasing diabetes risk,” He and colleagues write. “Further large-scale clinical trials are needed to establish causal inference and elucidate the mechanisms behind this potential benefit.”

There is more understood today about the relationship between magnesium and diabetes than ever before – and it is leading healthcare professionals to state:  If you think there may be diabetes in your future, now’s the time to make sure you are getting the magnesium your body needs on a daily basis.

 

 

 

 

In the book The Magnesium Miracle by Dr. Carolyn Dean, an MD and naturopath. According to Dr. Dean, nearly 80% of Americans are deficient in magnesium, and it is often the primary factor in heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and most muscular problems.

The NIH says, “Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body… [It] is involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis.” And according to our own Amy Campbell, “Results from three very large studies indicate that people who consume a diet rich in magnesium have a lower risk of getting Type 2 diabetes.”

 

 

People with diabetes are more likely than those without to be low in magnesium. According to an article on About.com, “Elevated blood glucose levels increase the loss of magnesium in the urine, which in turn lowers blood levels of magnesium.” So getting enough magnesium is especially important in diabetes.

In spite of these benefits, medical authorities rarely recommend magnesium. That’s why I call it the forgotten mineral. For instance, people on diuretics (“water pills”) are usually given potassium supplements to replace the potassium lost through urination. But magnesium is lost the same way and rarely supplemented.

According to the piece on About.com, “Healthy adults who eat a varied diet do not generally need to take a magnesium supplement.”

Dr. Dean strongly disagrees. She says that the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) is 350 to 400 milligrams per day, but for best health, we may need roughly double this amount. She says the Standard American Diet (SAD) provides very little magnesium. Soils depleted by factory farming may grow foods low in magnesium. Refined grains and processed foods have usually been stripped of most of their magnesium.

 

 

Dean isn’t the only one recommending this mineral. Drs. Andrea Rosanoff, PhD, and Mildred Seelig, MD, authors of The Magnesium Factor, state, “Mg has effects that parallel those of statins.”

In the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, they wrote, “Both statins and normal Mg levels prevent clotting, reduce inflammation and prevent [arterial] plaques. But statins raise liver enzymes, can cause [muscle damage] and have many other side effects, while Mg supplements tend to protect [muscles] and have temporary diarrhea or mild GI distress as the only side effect.”

 

The doctors point to studies showing that nations with low-magnesium/high-calcium diets — the US, Finland, and the Netherlands, in particular — have a lethal heart disease rate much higher than in nations with high-magnesium/low-calcium diets, such as Japan. Yet our medical system encourages statins and ignores magnesium.

 

 

 

Metabolic Syndrome

 

Because the risk factors for diabetes, are also the risk factors for heart disease,   clinicians and healthcare professionals refer to this group of risk factors as:  Metabolic Syndrome.   For a short time, it was known as Syndrome X, but it is simply this:     The factors when found together, increase the risk of Coronary Artery Disease, Stroke and Type 2 Diabetes.  Magnesium has a major role to play in each of these conditions, and all risk factors when present, suggest a deficiency in magnesium.

 

 

Metabolic, a word that refers to the biochemical processes that occur by the trillions every day in our cells – is also what magnesium does best:  325 metabolic, or enzymatic processes at the cellular level.    It is not surprising that magnesium, when consumed in recommended allowances every day – will minimize  the risk factors associated with Metabolic Syndromes like heart disease and diabetes. 

With widespread magnesium deficiency, it is entirely possible that magnesium is responsible for far more illness than originally thought, and its role in metabolic syndromes is better understood every year.

 

 

Metabolic syndrome risk factors include:

 

  • Known as ‘central obesity’ or ‘apple-shaped’ –  extra weight around the middle and upper parts of the body
  • Insulin resistance. The body uses insulin less effectively than normal. Insulin is needed to help control the amount of sugar in the body. As a result, blood sugar and fat levels rise.
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure, or hypertension
  • Aging
  • Genetic history of any of the factors
  • Hormone changes
  • Lack of exercise 

 

 

People who have metabolic syndrome often have two other problems that can either cause the condition or make it worse:

 

  • Excess blood clotting
  • Increased levels of blood substances that are a sign of inflammation throughout the body

According to research, magnesium deficiencies have been seen both inside the cell and outside the cell in pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, stable diabetes and chronic diabetes (Type 1).    Prolonged magnesium deficiency is also directly related to increased incidences of heart disease typically associated with poorly managed diabetes.

 

 

 

Insulin Resistance

 

Insulin is a hormone.   It is produced by the pancreas in response to eating a meal to carry the blood sugar (glucose) produced from the meal to our cells for energy production.   Insulin resistance or insulin sensitivity refers to the challenge the pancreas is having in producing enough insulin to process the glucose in the blood.  

The more difficulty the cells have metabolizing glucose, the more insulin the pancreas wants to produce.   The metabolic process of people with diabetes is no different than the metabolisms of people without diabetes.   The only difference is in the volume of insulin produced, or the body’s ability to utilize the insulin that is produced.    When there is too much glucose in the blood, two problems result:  1) The pancreas will try to keep up by producing more and more insulin, and 2) excess glucose will be turned into saturated body fat. 

It can become a vicious cycle of producing more and more insulin that is less and less able to be utilized by tired cells who can no longer keep pace.  High sugar, high fat diets and a lack of exercise will make it even more difficult for the insulin to do it’s job.   And in an ironic twist, high sugar levels in the blood will make you feel lethargic, and even hungry, as the insulin is still scrambling to get the glucose to your cells to produce energy.  

Eventually, the body becomes somewhat immune to the insulin, and it is no longer able to metabolize the glucose at all.   But all the non-functioning insulin in the blood – known as hyperinsulinemia –  is linked to damaged blood cells, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and even osteoporosis.

Stress and illness can also cause increased insulin production.  

 

 

Magnesium and Diabetes

 

A characteristic of insulin resistance – where the body needs to produce higher volumes of insulin –  is that little to no magnesium is found in the centre of the blood cells.  This is referred to as intracellular magnesium.    We know there is a direct correlation between magnesium and insulin.   Magnesium is the one mineral that ‘twins’ with almost every other nutrient in one metabolic process or another, and the hormone insulin is no different.

Insulin has something to do with moving magnesium across the cell wall – inside and outside the cell.  Magnesium when found in adequate supply inside the cell, contributes to improve “insulin-mediated glucose uptake” which is a fancy way of saying magnesium helps insulin do its’ job. 

Conversely the absence of intracellular magnesium is responsible for impairing insulin action – meaning it’s not working – and a worsening of insulin resistance in both Type 2 diabetes and in hypertensive patients, that is people with high blood pressure.  

Study scientists also noted that reduced magnesium in the middle of the cell also resulted in “exaggerated calcium concentrations.”     The consequences of excess calcium are well-known in matters of the heart and calcification of organs and muscles – but this study would suggest that the imbalance of magnesium and calcium also has an impact on the management of diabetes.

Clinical Implications of Low Magnesium Levels

 

  • Insulin resistance is known to be directly related to magnesium deficiency
  • Diabetes-related diseases such as atherosclerosis (narrowed heart vessels that inhibit blood flow, usually as a result of high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol) and retinopathy (damage to the blood vessels of the eye) have an increased likelihood of progression when there is low levels of intracellular magnesium.

Fight Back Against Osteoporosis

 

 

 

Osteoporosis (“porous bone”) is a disease that weakens bones, putting them at greater risk for sudden and unexpected fractures. Osteoporosis results in an increased loss of bone mass and strength. The disease often develops without any symptoms or pain, and it is usually not discovered until the weakened bones cause painful fractures. Most of these are fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine.

 

Although osteoporosis occurs in both men and women, women are four times more likely to develop the disease than men. After age 50, one in two white women, and one in four white men, will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetimes. Another 30 percent have low bone density that puts them at risk of developing osteoporosis (including African-Americans).

Osteoporosis is responsible for more than 2 million fractures each year, and this number continues to grow. There are steps you can take to prevent osteoporosis from ever occurring. Treatments can also slow the rate of bone loss if you do have osteoporosis.

 

 

 

Causes of Osteoporosis

 

Though the exact cause of osteoporosis is unknown, we do understand how the disease develops. Your bones are made of living, growing tissue. The inside of healthy bone looks like a sponge; this area is called trabecular bone. An outer shell of dense bone wraps around the trabecular, or spongy bone. This hard shell is called cortical bone. When osteoporosis occurs, the “holes” in the “sponge” grow larger and more numerous, which weakens the inside of the bone.

In addition to supporting the body and protecting vital organs, bones store calcium and other minerals. When the body needs calcium, it breaks down and rebuilds bone. This process, called “bone remodeling,” supplies the body with needed calcium while keeping the bones strong.

Up until about age 30, a person normally builds more bone than he or she loses. After age 35, bone breakdown occurs faster than bone buildup, which causes a gradual loss of bone mass. A person who has osteoporosis loses bone mass at a greater rate. After menopause, the rate of bone breakdown occurs even more quickly.

 

 

 

Osteoporosis Risk Factors

 

There are many risk factors that increase your chance of developing osteoporosis:

 

  • Gender — Women over the age of 50 or postmenopausal women have the greatest risk of developing osteoporosis. Women undergo rapid bone loss in the first 10 years after entering menopause, because menopause slows the production of estrogen, a hormone that protects against excessive bone loss.

 

  • Age — Your risk for osteoporosis fractures increases as you age.

 

  • Race —Caucasian and Asian women are more likely to develop osteoporosis. However, African-American and Hispanic women are still at risk. In fact, African-American women are more likely than white women to die after a hip fracture.

 

  • Bone structure and body weight — Petite and thin people have a greater risk of developing osteoporosis because they have less bone to lose than people with more body weight and larger frames.

 

  • Family history — If your parents or grandparents have had any signs of osteoporosis, such as a fractured hip after a minor fall, you may have a greater risk of developing the disease.

 

  • Nutrition — You are more likely to develop osteoporosis if your body doesn’t have enough calcium and vitamin D.

 

  • Lifestyle — People who lead sedentary (inactive) lifestyles have a higher risk of osteoporosis.

  • Medications — Certain medications cause side effects that may damage bone and lead to osteoporosis. These include steroids, treatments for breast cancer, and medications for treating seizures.

Diagnosing Osteoporosis

 

Painless and accurate medical tests can give you information about your bone health before problems begin.

Bone mineral density (BMD) tests, or bone measurements, also known as dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans, are X-rays that use very small amounts of radiation to determine the bone density of the spine, hip, or wrist.

Your physician can order these tests for you. All women over the age of 65 should have a bone density test. The DXA scan is done earlier for women who have risk factors for osteoporosis.

Men over age 70, or younger men with risk factors, should also consider getting a bone density test.

 

 

Preventing Osteoporosis

 

Your diet and lifestyle are two important risk factors you can control to prevent osteoporosis. Replacing lost estrogen with hormone therapy also provides a strong defense against osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

 

 

Calcium

 

To maintain strong, healthy bones, you need a diet rich in calcium throughout your life.

One cup of skim or 1 percent fat milk contains 300 milligrams of calcium. Besides dairy products, other good sources of calcium are salmon with bones, sardines, kale, broccoli, calcium-fortified juices and breads, dried figs, and calcium supplements.

It is best to try to get the calcium from food and drink. For those who need supplements, remember that the body can only absorb 500 mg of calcium at a time. You should take your calcium supplements in divided doses, since anything more than 500 mg will not be absorbed.

Calcium Per Tablet or Dose

The product label should state the amount of elemental calcium in each tablet, e.g., 300 mg of elemental calcium in a 750 mg tablet of calcium carbonate. The amount of elemental calcium is the figure you use to calculate your true daily intake from a supplement.

 

Price

The most expensive preparations are not necessarily better. Costs will vary among brand name products and similar generic supplements. Prices may also vary with the amount of elemental calcium per tablet. Compare brands and prices.

 

Side Effects

For some, calcium supplements may cause stomach upset, constipation or nausea.

Try different brands or forms, e.g., gelatin capsules, chewable calcium or effervescent tablets, to find a suitable product for you. Calcium citrate may be a good alternative to calcium carbonate.

 

Safety

Specific  standards have been established for lead content, quality, and

  • Take calcium carbonate with food or immediately after eating. It is absorbed more effectively when there is food in the stomach. Calcium citrate, calcium lactate and calcium gluconate are well absorbed at any time.
  • Take calcium with plenty of water.
  • Take no more than 500-600 mg of elemental calcium at one time. In fact, it is best to take smaller doses more frequently rather than large doses once a day.
  • Antacids are an acceptable source of calcium. The calcium in these products is calcium carbonate and should be taken at mealtime for better absorption.

 

Double-Check Your Calcium Supplement Dose

Only take a calcium supplement if your doctor has advised you to do so. Unless you are very confident that you are taking the correct dose, show your bottle of calcium to your doctor or pharmacist to be sure that you are not taking too much calcium, which may be harmful. If you change the brand of calcium supplement you are taking, you may need to show the new bottle to your doctor or pharmacist again, to make sure that your dose of calcium has not changed.

 

 

Vitamin D

 

Vitamin D is also important because it enables the body to absorb calcium. The recommended daily allowances of vitamin D are listed below. Vitamin D can also be obtained from sunlight exposure a few times a week or by drinking fortified milk.

There are very few food sources of vitamin D. In fact, it is impossible for adults to get sufficient vitamin D from diet alone, no matter how good their nutrition. Therefore, you should have a routine of vitamin D supplementation all year round.

 

Healthy adults between19-50 years of age, including pregnant or breast feeding women, require 400 – 1,000 IU daily. Those over 50 or those younger adults at high risk (with osteoporosis, multiple fractures, or conditions affecting vitamin D absorption) should receive 800 – 2,000 IU daily. These amounts are safe.  Taking more than 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily should be done only under medical supervision.

 

The best way to ensure that you are getting sufficient vitamin D is by taking a supplement. The type of vitamin D you should purchase is vitamin D3 (also called cholecalciferol). This is the most common type of vitamin D found in supplements.

 

Vitamin D by itself comes in 400 and 1000 IU tablets. Most multivitamins contain some vitamin D but the amounts vary quite a bit, so be sure to read the small print on the label carefully. Some calcium supplements also contain vitamin D3 and again the amounts vary. If you are unclear how much vitamin D your supplements contain, please check with your pharmacist.

 

There is something special about Vitamin D that does not apply to most other vitamins or supplements.  Vitamin D is fat soluble. This means vitamin D can be “made up.” If you miss your vitamin D today, for example, you can take double the amount tomorrow. If you miss your vitamin D for a whole week, you can take all the vitamin D that you missed altogether at the end of the week. However, you shouldn’t do this on a regular basis  without consulting with your physician and this can only be done with vitamin D. It cannot be done with other medications or supplements.

Blackcurrant is a shrub native to Europe and Asia. It has yellowish white flowers and black fruits. Blackcurrant seed oil as the name suggests is extracted from the seeds of these fruits. Jams, jellies, juices and even dietary supplements are prepared from blackcurrant.

The fruits are rich in Vitamin C, flavonoids, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins etc. The oil contains around 15-19% fatty acids: gamma and alpha linolenic acid and stearidonic acid as well as anthocyanidins and flavonoids.

Researchers concluded that GLA is a safe and effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, and a combination of omega 3 fatty acids and GLA is found to be beneficial in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Blackcurrant Seed Oil for Arthritis Pain Relief

 

Clinical trials investigating the effect of blackcurrant seed oil in arthritis demonstrate that it can reduce symptoms of arthritis as well as inflammation on long term. It also suppresses inflammation in gout.A review examining different herbal therapies for arthritis mentions that blackcurrant seed oil does relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.Leventhal et. al conducted a clinical trial of 24 weeks where patients with rheumatoid arthritis were treated with blackcurrant seed oil capsules. A 2 month clinical trial on elderly individuals demonstrated that blackcurrant seed oil improves immune function.

Animal studies show that blackcurrant oil consumption improves antioxidant status, reduces liver fat, improves blood lipids and reduces cholesterol levels.

Tahvonen et. al in their clinical trial reported that 3g of blackcurrant seed oil per day improves the blood lipid profile and reduces the level of bad cholesterol. Blackcurrant seed oil is also proven to be beneficial for blood pressure control.

Not only was it discovered that all patients tolerated curcumin well, but they discovered curcumin was as effective as Prozac in managing depression.

 

According to the authors, “This study provides first clinical evidence that curcumin may be used as an effective and safe therapy for treatment in patients with Mild Depression.”

The journal Oncogene published the results of a study that evaluated several anti-inflammatory compounds and found that aspirin and ibuprofen are least effective, while curcumin, is among the most effective anti-inflammatory compounds in the world. 

 

This news should have reached every household in the world after the study was conducted because inflammation puts people at risk for almost every disease process known to man.

 

 

Diseases today such as cancer, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, high cholesterol and chronic pain can be the result of inflammation.

The study split these volunteers into three groups: curcumin treatment alone, diclofenac sodium alone, and a combination of the two. The results of the trial were eye-opening:

 

The curcumin group showed the highest percentage of improvement in overall [Disease Activity Score] scores and these scores were significantly better than the patients in the diclofenac sodium group. More importantly, curcumin treatment was found to be safe and did not relate with any adverse events. Our study provides the first evidence for the safety and superiority of curcumin treatment in patients with active RA, and highlights the need for future large-scale trials to validate these findings in patients with RA and other arthritic conditions.

 

Published by Phytotherapy Research in 2012, the results of this study has encouraged more human research to evaluate the amazing effects curcumin-rich plants like turmeric has on people suffering from various different types of arthritis.

An in-depth analysis of all the studies evaluating curcumin’s ability to manage inflammatory bowel disease (IBS, Crohn’s disease, and Ulcerative Colitis) found that many patients were able to stop taking their prescribed corticosteroids because their condition improved so dramatically by taking curcumin! 

 

For many patients with IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) corticosteroids reduce their pain symptoms, but damage the intestinal lining over time actually making the condition worse.

Just this past year the European Journal of Pharmacology published research that discovered curcumin naturally activates the opioid system in diabetic rats. Typically manipulated by drugs, this natural process serves as the body’s inherent pain-relieving response. 

 

Not being limited to diabetic pain conditions, an interesting study also published late last year gives us a clue as to the wide array of pain conditions that can be treated by curcumin.

 

Take, for instance, severe burns. Typically, burn victims are treated by dangerous opioids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. However, because of its anti-inflammatory benefits, U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research suggests that, curcumin should be used to treat burns instead of these conventional medications.

 

The trend should becoming clear at this point. Therapeutic use of turmeric and other curcumin-rich plants are displacing conventional medical treatments and proving it’s a legitimate natural painkiller.

What cannot be overstated, however, is that although statistically “comparable” to steroids in managing and reversing chronic disease, “The lack of side effects with curcumin is its greatest advantage compared with corticosteroids,” as stated by the authors in the above study out of K.G.   • Stunted growth in children

Ultimately, when taking into account the large amount of deadly complications these 10 drugs puts your body at risk for, it is easy to see how taking therapeutic curcumin is superior to most medicines.

Turmeric Side Effects

Total Time: 5 minutes
Serves: 2

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp Turmeric (powder or grated root)

Directions:

  1. Pour coconut milk and water into the saucepan and warm for 2 minutes
  2. Add in butter, raw honey and turmeric powder for another 2 minutes
  3. Stir and pour into glasses.

 

 

Turmeric Eggs Recipe

Total Time: 25 minutes

Serves: 1–2

Ingredients:

  • 4 eggs
  • 2 ounces shredded raw cheese
  • 3 tablespoons ghee
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onions
  • 8 chopped green onions
  • 1 cup chopped yellow pepper
  • 6 cloves of minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon thyme
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon basil
  • 2 tablespoons turmeric

Directions:

  1. Sauté onions, green onions and garlic in pan with ghee over medium-low heat for 10 minutes.
  2. Add in eggs, cheese and herbs.
  3. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring continuously and add in turmeric.

Curried Carrot Soup Recipe

Total Time: 45 minutes
Serves: 4-6

Ingredients:

  • 4 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 5 cups of peeled carrots, thinly sliced into rounds
  • 2 cups fresh chopped onions
  • 2 tsp curry
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds, powder
  • 3/4 tsp yellow mustard seeds, powdered
  • 2 tsp lime peel, finely grated
  • 3 tsp fresh lime juice
  • sea salt and black pepper to taste
  • kefir or goats milk yogurt for garnish

Directions:

  1. Melt coconut oil over medium heat in soup pot
  2. Add coriander, mustard seed powder, curry powder and ginger powder. Stir for a minute.
  3. Sprinkle with sea salt and pepper
  4. Add onions and sauté until soft
  5. Add Chicken broth and sliced carrots and cook on medium low heat for about 30 mins
  6. Puree in blender until smooth, then return to pot.
  7. Stir in lime juice and season with more sea salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Serve garnished with Yogurt and Parsley

Studies Prove Turmeric Treats Prostate Cancer

 

 

 

Turmeric offers many positive health benefits, especially to prostate health. A double-­blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial published in the Journal of Cancer Science & Therapy cited radioprotective effects of curcumin in prostate cancer patients.

 

Furthermore, of two patient groups (one that received the curcumin supplement and one that received placebo), the group receiving the curcumin supplementation showed significant, long lasting, improvement in urinary ease and frequency. 

 

Another study investigated the potential effects of curcumin on prostate cancer cells in­ vitro. When curcumin was administered to the cancer cells, researchers observed a notable increase in cancer cell death as the curcumin concentrations increased. 

 

 

Curcumin (From Turmeric) for Prostate Enlargement

 

A study published in the December 2012 issue of Italy’s Panminerva Medica evaluated the effect of a curcumin supplement taken by persons with BPH (enlarged prostate). Sixty­-one patients were divided into two groups for the 6-month study.

The results showed that the group who received curcumin supplementation experienced fewer urinary infections and less incontinence than the control group. Significant improvements in urinary stream and quality­ of­ life were also reported. 

Researchers surmise that curcumin may actually help the body inhibit the compounds that cause prostate enlargement.

Turmeric for Prostate Cancer

 

After skin cancer, prostate cancer is most common among men in US.

The prostate gland is located near the bladder of men, surrounding the urethra. This tiny gland, the size of a walnut makes seminal fluid and when a cancerous tumor forms here, it is known as prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the third highest cause of cancer deaths among men – especially over the age of 75. These tumors can be benign or cancerous and when caught early, can be successfully treated.

Symptoms of prostate cancer include difficult, painful and frequent urination, back and hip pain, blood in the urine and so on, when the cancer is localized.

When it spreads, a patient can suffer from kidney failure, weight loss, anemia or bone pain. Genetics, ethnicity, diet, environment or hormones could cause prostate cancer. Once diagnosed treatment of prostate cancer may consist of surgery, radiation therapy or hormone medication.

Prostate cancer is often diagnosed only after metastases – i.e. when the cancer has spread and tumors form in other organs. In 3% of all cases, prostate cancer can prove fatal after metastases.

Here is some of the scientific evidence that proves turmeric’s efficacy in prostate cancer treatment.

 

1. Curcumin Has Chemopreventive Potential

 

Chemopreventive agents are those that prevent or reduce the risk of developing cancers.

Alcoholic extract of turmeric is proven to inhibit the migration and invasive potential of prostate cancer cells .

This extract contained compounds other than curcuminoids thus demonstrating that curcumin alone it not responsible for the anti-cancer potential.

Teiten et al conducted a study to assess how curcumin exhibits its chemopreventive potential in case of prostate cancer.

It was observed that for proliferation of cancer cells activity of 60 proteins was influenced and curcumin could alter the activity of 19 such proteins in order to prevent growth of such cells.

Inflammation of the prostate gland serves as a risk factor for development of prostate cancer.

A novel way by which curcumin prevents onset of prostate cancer is by serving as an anti-inflammatory agent and reducing any inflammation in the gland.

 

What does this mean?  

 

 

Curcumin has the potential of being developed as a chemopreventive agent against prostate cancer and therefore can be used as primary treatment for prevention of prostate cancer.

 

2. Curcumin Destroys Prostate Cancer Cells and Prevents Metastases

 

Curcumin based anti-prostate cancer agents are being developed on the premise that it acts as a multitarget drug and has the potential to treat castration resistant prostate cancer.

Study reports that out of the three curcuminoids, demethoxycurcumin shows the most efficient anti-tumor activity against prostate cancer cells.

Curcumin acts on many biochemical pathways in order to prevent cell proliferation and also to cause cancer cell death.

For example protein kinase D1 is a biological molecule that is expressed in high amounts in normal prostate cells but is reduced in prostate cancer cells.

Curcumin activates this protein and thereby prevents growth and spread of prostate cancer.

This multi targeted action of curcumin leads to apoptosis or cell death of cancerous cells which suggests its value as a chemopreventive agent.

It also prevents metastases- spread of cancer to other parts of the body. Curcumin suppresses the activity of nuclear factor-kappaB which reduces the production of pro-inflammatory chemicals CXCL1 and -2.

These if not controlled can induce metastases formation.

Researchers at Columbia University have extensively studied the effects of curcumin on prostate cancer.

Their findings reveal that curcumin can treat both hormone dependant and independant prostate cancer.

It inhibits colony forming ability or prostate cancer cells and also destroys them. It also prevents metastases.

 

What does this mean?  

 

 

Curcumin prevents proliferation and cause apoptosis of prostate cancer cells.

It acts on hormone dependant and independant prostate cancer and prevents spread of this cancer. Other curcuminoids also show anti-tumor effect.

3. Curcumin is a Chemosensitizer and Radiosensitizer

 

Goel A and Aggarwal BB in the paper describe as to how curcumin specifically chemosensitizes and radiosensitizes tumor cells but at the same time protects normal cells from the harmful effects of chemotherapeutic agents and radioactivity.

Tumor necrosis factor is perhaps the principal protein involved in inflammation. Additionally modulation of its activity can induce cell death.

TRAIL mediated immunotherapy works on the principle of activating this protein to destroy cancerous cells. But cancer cells develop a resistance towards it.

Research shows that curcumin reverses this resistance and sensitizes prostate cancer cell to this treatment.

Curcumin also increases the efficacy of first line treatment drugs like bicalutamide and docetaxel which are used to treat prostate cancer.

 

What does this mean?  

 

 

Curcumin increases sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents and radiotherapy. At the same time it protects normal cells from side effects of these treatments.

4. Curcumin is Therapeutic for Prostatitis

 

Prostatitis is the inflammation of the prostate gland. It can serve as a risk factor for prostate cancer.

As mentioned earlier, curcumin displays its chemopreventive potential by reducing inflammation in the prostate gland.

Prostatitis is characterised by pain in the genitals and lower back and discomfort while urinating.

A study was conducted where curcumin along with other herbal extracts were evaluated for their effect on bacterial prostatitis.

Experimental group received antibiotics and herbal extracts while the other group received only antibiotics.

Within 6 months of treatment, the experimental group was completely treated with no sign of recurrence. Animal study proves that curcumin is effective in treating non bacterial prostatitis.

 

What does this mean?  

 

 

Prostatitis is inflammation of prostate gland that increases the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Curcumin can help treat inflammation of prostate gland.

Scientists have developed different formulations with curcumin to treat prostate cancer

 

Structural analogs (compounds with variation in structure of parent compound) of curcumin also show anti-cancer activity towards prostate cancer.

Due to its poor bioavailability scientists are preparing different formulations of curcumin such as nanoparticles to treat prostate cancer.

Lab studies show that extracts of turmeric and ginger in combination are potent enough to prevent growth of prostate cancer cells.

Curcumin in combination with phenethyl isothiocyanate found in cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts etc shows anti-prostate cancer activity.

Different bioactive ingredients found in plants have been identified for their anti0cancer potential.

In a clinical trial participants received an oral capsule containing a blend of pomegranate, green tea, broccoli and turmeric for 6 months.

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a chemical that is secreted by prostate cells and is used as an indicator for detecting prostate cancer.

Treatment with this capsule lowered the levels of PSA thereby suggesting its efficacy as a primary treatment drug.

Zyflamend, a combination of herbal extracts-one of them being turmeric, is proven to be effective as maintenance treatment in order to keep the cancer dormant and prevent it from activating again.

ProstaCaid a dietary supplement containing BCM-95 extract of turmeric root (curcumin & turmeric oil) is also found to inhibit growth of prostate cancer cells.

 

What does this mean?  

 

 

Due to its low bioavailability, different formulations of curcumin are being developed to treat prostate cancer.

Precautions

 

Turmeric in food is absolutely safe. But if you plan on taking supplements consult a physician to decide the best dose for you and to avoid drug interactions.

Also do not take them if you are scheduled for a surgery in next 15 days.

The possible drug interactions include blood thinning medications, stomach acid reducing drugs and anti-diabetic medicines.

Dosage

 

Curcumin for Cancer – An 8 Week Regimen

Week 1: Start with small dosage of 1 gm curcumin per day. If you see no side effects, take it for a week and proceed to dosage of week 2.

 

Week 2: Increase the dosage of curcumin to 2 gm/ day. Again check for any issues side effects etc. If everything looks fine, take it for a week and proceed to dosage of week 3.

 

 

 

Week 3: Double the dosage again to 4 gm / day. Again if things look fine, continue for a week and go for final step.

 

 

 

Week 4-8: Double again to 8 gm / day. Continue this for 5 weeks
